Learning Target: Students will be able to evaluate the volume of composite shapes.
Task: Students would find and record the dimensions of rectangular prisms using LxWxH to find the composite volume of the various prisms.
Materials: Students were given a worksheet to write answers and show their work. Students also required a laptop with which to work on.
Time: Students had 40 minutes to complete the task. Only a hand full of the students were able to finish in the time allotted.
Lesson Setting: Students work for a construction company and are asked to find how much water is needed to fill the various pools.
Setup: Set in “immutable world”, “creative mode,” and unable to equip any items
The world was built off of the Minecraft lesson covering volume.
Amulet was used to create the pools as well as quickly find the composite volume.

Reflection: This lesson went smoothly. Most of the students were able to finish, and those who did not finish displayed increased off-task behavior that had to be redirected. Some individual instruction was required, but not much. Modeling to students how to count the blocks by “hitting” them solved most of the issues. The challenge level of the material composite shapes was perfect for both the lower-functioning and higher-functioning students. Student engagement was high, and students requested additional Minecraft lessons.
