Learning Target: Students will be able to evaluate the area of composite shapes
Task: Students are to find the composite shapes in the form of floor plans in Minecraft.
Materials: Students were given a worksheet to write answers and show their work. Students also required a laptop with which to work on.
Time: Students had 40 minutes to complete the task. Only 15% of the students were able to finish in the time allotted
Setting: Students are attending a Floor plan Expo
Setup: Minecraft was set in “immutable world”, “adventure mode”, and other various settings as seen below.
Shapes were set in the flooring made with a contrasting color
A row of Redstone dust was laid down with repeaters to power command blocks to prohibit students from selecting any items from their inventory.
NPCs were placed with word problems for students to interact with.
Result: Students enjoyed the lesson. The content is related directly to the standards.
Reflection: I had only a short time to create the worksheet, and a few mistakes were made. The last moment change that helped out was increasing the brightness on the worksheet images, making the grided blocks impossible to count on the worksheet, prompting students to calculate the dimensions of the shapes in the Minecraft world.
